The Most Important Meal of the Day

What's the most important meal of the day?

Before you answer what everyone else says it is, what do you think it is?

Are there any assumptions in the question?

When teachers asked you this question in middle school or high school, invariably the answer was breakfast. An, "I think it's lunch because it's in the middle of the day, and I'd not want to be totally starving all day long" was usually answered with a, "Nope, it's breakfast." Gee, thanks for the explanation.

Even today most people say that breakfast is the most important meal because it triggers your metabolism and helps you burn calories all day long. Kellogg's is in on the action, telling you that eating Special K will actually help you lose weight compared to not eating breakfast in the morning. I agree, breakfast seems to do these things. I make sure I eat breakfast, and it makes me healthier. But is it the most important?

Let's get back to the assumption. I think the only way someone can answer that breakfast is the most important meal is because they assume that you'll eat all three meals. In such a scenario, breakfast is most important because it gets you off on the right foot. No argument here.

But then why ask the question? It's certainly not as groundbreaking a question as people make it sound. I think a groundbreaking question is to ask, "If you were to choose one meal to eat in a day, which meal would it be?" (And you can still eat anything you want for any meal, so we're pretty much just thinking about the time at which you eat your meal.)

I'm going with lunch. What say you?

My assumption that other people assume that the question assumes you eat three meals a day is apt.

The importance of breakfast is a myth according to an article I was much too lazy to read in its entirety.
