What Kind of Car Should I Buy? - 5 Cents
Posted by: Mark Nichols

Here's the deal:

My 1992 Mercury Sable Wagon is finally on the brink. It was grandmother owned and operated until August, 2003, when she graciously gave it up to her favorite grandson... me - sorry Paul. : )

When she handed it over it had a little over 20,000 miles on it...now it has 95,000. Its age is finally showing, and it might be time to move on to something a little more... modern.

So I need suggestions on a new (actually, used) car. I can't get a new new car because Connecticut charges property tax on cars. The newer the car, the higher the tax. And I don't want to pay the insurance rates on a new car, either.

Here are the guidelines:

- 2003- or 2004-ish

- good gas mileage (fueleconomy.gov is good for this) (I consider 30 good)

- 4-door

Whaddya got?

Go VW! We have an '02 Jetta that continues to be great to us.

That VW is a diesel, right? Otherwise I don't think it meets my 30 mpg requirement. That's potentially a good car to get.

Well, I guess I never updated the world regarding this - bought a 2004 Scion xA - the first year they were made. It's been good to me and my family so far! I recommend it especially for its high seats, which are easy to get in and out of. It also hits that magical 30+ mpg.
