Christmas Music - 5 Cents
Posted by: Mark Nichols

It's Christmas time, and unless you're a pre-conversion Grinch, you've probably been listening to some Christmas music. I thought I'd share some of my faves, and also provide some clarity around some other songs.

Some favorites

Happy Christmas (War is Over) from John Lennon (with sappy image montage):

O Holy Night sung by Celine Dion:

Something About Christmas Time:

We Three Kings (from a Claymation Christmas TV special):

Some Clarity

Winter Wonderland:

I've always thought the lyrics went: "In the meadow we can build a snowman, and pretend that he is Carson Brown." I just assumed Carson Brown was some famous person back when the song was written, but lo, they're singing "Parson Brown", and a parson is apparently a traveling minister who marries people. Which makes a lot more sense given the next lines in the song are: "He'll say 'Are you married?' We'll say 'No man, but you can do the job when you're in town!'"

I Saw Three Ships (Come Sailing In):

When I hear this tune, I revert to singing "Christmas day on Christmas day on Christmas day in the morning!" over and over again. Apparently there are other lyrics to this song. If you're interested, they're here.

Go Tell it on the Mountain:

Yes, it's a Christmas song. Check out the lyrics here. It mentions shepherds, an angels chorus, the Savior's birth, and Christmas morn.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Lots of the video links above are dead. I could provide new ones, but they'll likely die soon, too. Here's the David Bowie/Bing Crosby duet I can sometimes stand.
